Subject:Disk is completely filled up
Posted by:texasts.
Time:7:29 am.
The startup disk on my MBP filled up completely over the last day or so. It was getting up there, but on Wednesday *the last time I checked* there was 14 GB free. When I woke the old boy up this morning, I was greeted with the "Startup disk is almost full" message.

Poked around but I must confess I am not really sure what I should be looking for. Or how to, really.

But I looked around found a few redundant files, moved them to the trash, emptied it. The disk size briefly fluctuated and almost immediately went to zero KB available.

I haven't got a clue what is going on here.

What should I be looking at or for?

Subject:Firefox hanging upon startup
Posted by:liquidcross.
Time:5:50 pm.
Here's a tricky one for you: after my Mac wakes up from sleep (either display sleep or full sleep, it doesn't matter which), Firefox will not start up properly. The icon will bounce, then stay "lit," but the application window never appears, and I have to force quit. The only way to fix it, so far, is to log out then log back in. As you may guess, that's a pain. Anyone else have this issue? And more importantly, how did you fix it? (The obvious choice - never let the system go to sleep - is not an option for me.)

PS - I'm running an iMac 21.5", 4GB RAM, OS X 10.6.1, and Firefox 3.5.5. Addons are Echofon, Adblock Plus, and NoScript.

Ever since I upgraded to the latest version of Safari, I've had these funny downloads automatically pop up called ch.ashx.
Does anyone know why this happens? Is it a virus? Does anyone know how to make it stop?

thanks

Subject:LiveJournal Major Notes: Spam counter-attack, RSS feeds again, CSI Deadly Intent contest
Posted by:theljstaff.
Time:1:15 pm.

The empire strikes back

In recent weeks, we've taken huge steps towards blocking spam accounts on LiveJournal. In fact, we've suspended as many as 30,000 accounts in a single day! We've implemented several pre-emptive measures to prevent the creation of spam accounts, and we've honed our detection of suspicious content. Spam bots are a crafty lot, so we'll continue to refine our tactics and keep up the good fight to keep you safe from spam attacks on LiveJournal.

RSS feeds again

If you're addicted to [info]xkcd_rss, [info]icanhaschzbrgr, or other syndicated feeds, we're pleased to report that we've resolved the update error that was mucking up your RSS feeds. While content was being pulled correctly, it wasn't being posted to the feeds themselves. Late last week, we finally nailed down what we hope was the root problem, so content should post properly. We thank you for your patience.

Wii have killer CSI Deadly Intent contests!

[info]c_s_i

If you're a gamer who loves CSI, have Wii got news for you! [info]c_s_i is sponsoring killer contests. Simply post a question to a member of the CSI crew. The winner will get a free copy of CSI: Deadly Intent for Nintendo Wii (with a retail value of $39.99) and get their question answered by a member of the CSI writing team! There's also a fantastic monthly contest. To enter, join [info]c_s_i, play the online version of CSI: Deadly Intent, and respond to a two-part query for a chance to win a Wii! Entries will be judged on composition and originality. Sorry, but you must be a U.S. resident and over 18 years old to participate. Check out the rules here.

Enveloped in postcards

Last week, we asked you to send in postcards to help us decorate our drab concrete walls. Here's a photo of the results so far! Thank you so much and please keep them coming! You can mail them to Frank the Goat, Esq., c/o LiveJournal, Inc., 539 Bryant Street, Suite 210, San Francisco, CA 94107. Be sure to include your username, since we'll be giving ten random users paid account credits.

If you haven't visited our new LiveJournal photo community, you're in for an amazing visual trip. LiveJournal users from around the world will take you on a scenic journey to everywhere. Post your own pictures or kick back and enjoy at [info]lj_photophile. You can view some of this week's awesome photos after the jump. Time:7:01 pm.
Anyone have this problem:

I upgraded to Snow Leopard in September and every now and then, funny things happen with my desktop. For instance the hard drive icon will move by itself and it'll go off the screen to where I have to drag it back to its original place. Also once the menu bar went and started acting funny. It wouldn't show up right.

I zapped the PRAM and it seems to be working fine now but I was wondering if anyone else had this "glitch." I really don't want to schedule an appointment with a Mac Genius for this...I already feel stupid because I had to for a very minor iPod problem that I could of fixed myself (that is if I knew about the "shuffle shake" feature on the iPod Nano).

Also, how do you find a corrupt music file in iTunes? I was having a problem syncing my iPod and the Mac Genius I talked to at the Apple Store in Cherry Hill said something about a possible corrupt file in iTunes. So how do I find it?

Does anyone know how to go about changing apples mail setting so that Firefox is the default v.s. Safari. I've googled a few different times, but I've found things that require a script (which is way above my head). Just wondering if there is an easy fix?

Subject:iDVD program
Posted by:starlaborne.
Time:4:51 pm.
I'm in the middle of making up a wee movie of wedding photographs for a client using the iDVD program. I am basically putting all their wedding photographs of the day onto the dvd as a slideshow. However, I am experiencing a problem & don't know how to overcome it.

The 100 photographs run for approximately 11 minutes, which worked out that my client could chose 3/4 songs to play in the background of the slideshow. However, I can only seem to get the same song playing over & over again, which realistically isn't very professional! Not to mention how the music then just cuts off when the slideshow is over instead of gradually playing out.

Can anyone please help me out here? Maybe it's a different program I need to use? The dvd will only have 2 buttons on it: the slideshow of photographs & a link giving out my business information.

I would really appreciate if someone could help me out with how I put various songs in the background of the slideshow & how to make the music gradually fade out.

Thanks so much for your time.

Subject:Incremental backup solutions
Posted by:liquidcross.
Time:7:15 pm.
Can anyone recommend me some good backup programs that'll do incremental as well as full backups? I'm using Time Machine for my primary hard drive, but I've got music stored on an external hard drive that I want to back up every week to a dedicated backup drive. I've also got another separate media drive, that I also want to back up to the aforementioned dedicated drive.

I used to use rsync, but I can't seem to get that to work anymore. Freeware solutions are preferable, but inexpensive one are good too, if they come highly recommended.

Subject:Google blocked?
Posted by:liquidcross.
Time:4:31 pm.
I just got my iMac back from the Apple Store today; they had to migrate my data over to a new one, since the old one had a bad DVD drive. Anyway, everything works great...except that Google.com and all of its associated sites (YouTube, etc) are now blocked. I get a "problem loading page/unable to connect" error immediately, every time. I get the same issue with Yahoo's homepage, but searching via Firefox's search box works fine for Yahoo. Pinging google.com in Terminal works fine. I've tried accessing the sites with other computers on my network, and had no problems there. The iMac's HOSTS file is clean, too.

Any thoughts???

Do you have already have Google Voice (Y/N)? y
If so, do you have a Google number (Y/N)?y

Post your question or report below (please include specific details and error messages, if applicable):
What are the costs/fees to call from a land line that has only local calling to long distance numbers (within U.S.A.) ?? i.e.- where it says call (the call button from my web browser) ...and where it says:
"Google will call your phone and connect you for free (in the US)
Call: __________________ enter a number
Phone to ring
drop-down menu of places to call.
connect..."
Another question I have.. Is there a fee/cost from your land line provider (that only can make local calls...our phone only makes local calls...) ...... in order to make a call from a land line (that makes only local calls).....to another state, in otherwords long distance??
========================================================================
If I wanted to make calls from a land line that only makes local calls, to another state, in other words, long distance, how can I do this free??

Posted by:dwell.
Time:5:17 pm.
EDIT: If you're reading this, our maintenance is OVER! The problem was not found on our equipment, which means we'll have to work with our ISP to fix this small problem -- which also means another maintenance window in the future -- but at least we have eliminated our side.

Thank you everyone, and a special shout out to [info]rekoil for giving me a great suggestion AND also the opportunity to feel like I've just called in to a local radio station.

Have a great day, night or afternoon wherever you may be.

---

Hi everyone, sorry for the late notice but I'm going to have to do some testing on 1 of our 4 internet circuits TONIGHT; Friday night or Saturday morning depending on which time zone you're in.

Most of us shouldn't notice any impact, though there may be some slowness or lag when I switch traffic on to our other ISP circuits and then another hit when I stop the tests. If a page won't load or times out, try hitting refresh 1 or 2 times and it should load then. If it doesn't work at all... trust me, I'll be typing really really really fast to try to undo whatever I just did. Hopefully you'll have some Halloween candy (if you're in the USA and celebrate that kind of thing) nearby to take away the bitterness of a small site outage. :(

Here's the handy-dandy Website That I Always Use to get a feel for when the maintenance will start in your area. Our site traffic historically dips on Friday afternoons until Saturday morning which is why we tend to pick this time for maintenance work.

tech details )

status.livejournal.org will, of course be updated before and after the maintenance window. Or else [info]marta will get mad at me. :D

Hey Folk -

I am going to pick up my new macbook from Fed Ex tomorrow (I missed delivery today) and it just occured to me that it has no firewire. I would normally import things from my old computer using a firewire, but don't know how I might do that this time. Google has not been my friend or I've not been using the right search terms. Any of you who've gotten a new machine in the post-firewire era have any news or advice?

Subject:LiveJournal Major Notes: Search super-tweak, postcards, and amazing user content!
Posted by:theljstaff.
Time:10:53 am.

In response to user comments from last week, we want to let you know that we'll remain LJ cut-free for the next month in order to get more eyeballs on our evolving newsletter. As for product coverage, that continues to be our top priority. For more granular detail, however, we recommend you join [info]lj_releases.

Super-tweak for Yandex search

Some of our beta testers expressed privacy concerns using the Yandex search engine. Here's why: Last week, when you ran a search, you could see the usernames (and only the usernames) of everyone who commented on an entry, even if that entry was switched to Private or Friends Only after it was originally indexed. You could NOT see the actual comments from Friends Only or Private posts. In response to your input, we've implemented a fix to keep all user activity currently marked Friends Only or Private completely hidden. If you'd prefer your public content not to be indexed by Yandex, click here and use the settings labeled Search Inclusion (this covers your entire journal) and/or Comment Search Inclusion (which covers comments only). To test drive Yandex search now, click here.

Postcards from the edge

Several years ago, we asked LiveJournal users to send postcards to help us decorate our dull, white-washed offices. Since a good idea warrants repetition, we're at it again (same issue, new address). We hope you'll surround us with LiveJournal love by sending your postcards to Frank the Goat, Esq., c/o LiveJournal, Inc., 539 Bryant Street, Suite 210, San Francisco, CA 94107. We'll post snapshots right here. Be sure to include your username, since we'll randomly pick 10 lucky recipients to win free paid account time.

Conquer Writer's Block

Here are some excerpts from this week's most popular question of the day:

If a friend or relative makes a racist or homophobic remark, do you tend to confront them or let it slide? Are you more likely to confront them if it offends you directly or someone else who seems reluctant to speak up?
  1. I find it easier to stand up for other people, and i wouldn't let it slide if they made a rude or hurtful comment.
  2. Usually if a friend makes a racist or homophobic remark, I tend to let it slide. I think that while i would not say such things myself, I have no right to censor those around me.
  3. This happens all of the time. I confront some relatives, but I refuse to if they are drunk or watch Fox News.
  4. I'd let it slide if it was just a private remark... As much as I despise bigotry and intolerance, I know that you can't change people-they have to change themselves ...
  5. Confront! confront! confront! Politely, but without equivocation.
  6. SPEAK UP. Always, always, always speak up. Letting something slide lets ignorance win. No matter if it offends me directly, or someone else, I will confront the speaker and let them know that's not ok.
  7. I don't get offended personally. As an immigrant, woman, gay and person of color if I took every single potentially offensive remark seriously I wouldn't get anything done.
  8. I punch them in the balls. With my mind.
  9. I do speak up, but often very timidly because I feel that I'm white and therefore I don't really have any authority to lecture someone on what's racist and what isn't...
  10. Generally speaking, I do not let this shit fly, because it reduces me as a person, to this non-person and it replicates the destructive discourse that makes sure that sexual minorities, racial minorities, women, people with disabilities, trans people and every intersection thereof into something other than human... And sometimes... I'm just too tired to deal with it, so I roll my eyes, make a sarcastic remark and hope the conversation moves on quickly.
For more daily questions and user comments, join [info]writersblock. FYI, we don't want to invade your privacy, so we haven't credited individual users for their responses. We'd appreciate your feedback on this!

So I checked my hard drive status like a good mac user and I got a repair your hard drive with disk utility. The first problem really is that my cd/dvd drive is in need of repair. Yeah I guess I could shell out the cash and just get an external one. Which brings me to problem number two. I don't have an OSX 4 install disk. I just have the disk that came with the computer. So do I actually need the OSX 4 install disk or can I use the one that cmae with the computer itself?

I have a powerbook 1GHz PPC G4 with OSX4.11

And here is the message that I got. cut for largish image )

So any advice would be helpful. Thanks for your time : ) BTW the computer seems to be working fine, I'm more concerned about the future.

Subject:Sync network folder
Posted by:keyf.
Time:11:45 pm.
Hi!
Here's what I get: a folder on a corporate file server (WinServ 2k3) which is changed by me and my team constantly. The folder is about 60gb on disk.
Most of the changes are offline, so I need to sync from and to my laptop (MacOS X 10.6.1). I used Windows offline folders before with no problems, but i'm lucky Mac user and that's the only thing I cannot setup.

I tried
1. rsync - doesn't allow to manage files which were changed both in folder A (local) and folder B (server)
2. Unison - works good, but scanning for changes takes him about 3 hours (60gb of files!)
3. Dropbox - not for me - too many sensitive files to upload them somewhere on the Net. and again - it's 60gb!
4. Synkron - always treats last changed file as a master version, which is not always true
5. GIT and Mercurial - good, but i tested it on a smaller folder and both of the tools created repository of 1,5gb for a folder of 3gb. This means that for a working folder the repository will take approx. 30gb. Not my way..

Would be great to hear any other ideas... :)
